When it Was Discovered

Uranus was the first planet discovered in modern times. It was discovered by William Herschel while he was searching the sky in March 13, 1781. It actually was seen many times but was ignored as another star. It was actually seen as early as 1690 when John Flamsteed cataloged it as 34 Tauri. Herschel named it " the Georgium Sidus" after his patron, King George III, of England. The name "Uranus" was purposed by Bode in conformity with the other planetary names from mythology, but it did not come to common use until 1850.

Voyager 2

Voyager 2 was the only spacecraft that visited Uranus on January 24, 1986.
